After seeing the thoroughly bizarre animated movie "Howl's Moving Castle" (a psychosexual study of which is practically begging to be written) I got curious about Hayao Miyazaki's films and borrowed a DVD of "Princess Mononoke".

I loved it -- interesting plot and characters, no real villains, shades of grey rather than black-and-white, and a thought-provoking resolution. However, what I liked best were the creepy-cute little tree spirits that appear in the forest.

Hence, two new wallpapers with the Tree Spirits. Feel free to take but please don't link directly to the files, so that I don't lose bandwidth.

Всему свое зелье
Oh, I like them)). But they'd be too spooky for my desktop, I think, although I'll give it a try.)

Princess M. was a bit too bloody for me, but still fascinating. Have you seen Spirited Away? That's "Miyazaki per se" for me.

Yeah, they are definitely a bit spooky. I just have a fondness for these sorts of exaggerated ancient forest scenes -- mossy trees, vines, murky light. Usually drawings of fantasy forests have dragons or elves or fairies or some other boring creatures that I don't like, so this was a nice change for me.

I haven't seen "Spirited Away", but if you recommend it, I will try to find a copy. :)

Всему свое зелье
tangofiction It's more "children's" than Princess, but it's definitely worth seeing too.

(My mom couldn't watch it though. And my daughter barely))))).

"Children's" is fine with me. Will keep an eye out for it, thanks! :)

Hi, Tango: Just thought I'd drop in. I can't wait to read any analysis you might do of Howl's Moving Castle. It even surpasses Spirited Away as my favorite Miyazaki movie (so far.)

Hi Stefanie, feel free to drop in anytime. I'm currently swamped with work so I really doubt I'll get around to analysing the living daylights out of HMC, but maybe one day when I'm bored... Suffice it to say that while I was at once amused and freaked out by the androgyny of the males :D (mind you, I realise it's a feature of anime, but this was so exaggerated that it unnerved me).

I'm sure there's something interesting in the fact that Sophie's cleaning efforts unintentionally make Howl (slightly) more masculine, but I don't have the spare brainpower at the moment to consider it properly. How about you write it? :)

Thanks, I'll look it up in the shop. (Sorry I haven't been commenting in your diary btw -- I've been in world hell for a while, no energy for anything. I hope you're not feeling as bad as I know you must be... *hug*)
