The British population (or at least, BBC viewers) were asked to nominate their favourite novels back in 2003, and the BBC released a Top 100 reading list from the results. This is expanded further into the Top 200 reading list.

I've read about a third of the list, but of the remainder, there are maybe 10 or so books that I'd actually like to read (eg, "All Quiet On The Western Front"). The rest don't interest me at all. So, I couldn't resist the temptation to make my own Best Reads list.

Here it is. I followed the BBC's rules and restricted it to novels only (though I made an exception for a couple of novellas); no poetry, drama or non-fiction (although I do list one novelised autobiography). All series, regardless of the number of books, are listed as one entry.

Hey, I found someone else who likes it! :D I usually get blank looks when I mention it.

It was really tempting to add all my favourite myths/fairy tales/short stories into this (Greek myths, Andersen's stories, The Velveteen Rabbit, etc) but it's impossible to rank them against longer works, so I managed to restrain myself. :D Maybe I'll make another list of short stories next time I'm procrastinating.

Haven't read it. *Adds to to-read list* Thanks! :)

Get back to work, you! <menaces>

<sobs>

I haven't even *read* a 100 novels I don't think.

Oh well, back to the grindstone.

Lyndal! Good to see you. :) Yes, yes, I know. (Are you trying out for the role of Mme Giry here, or what? Your "menacing" is very convincing, if so. :D) I had a four-hour incubation step and no inspiration for Solo. Had to do something brainless, and what could be more brainless than making a random list?

04.11.2005 в 15:37

More brainless? Um, "menacing" someone online for something they did a couple of days ago, whilst one is supposed to composing one's team component of some ker-raaaaazzzzyyyy official-document assessment that

I-don't-understand-because-I-won't-make-the-effort-to-try-to-because-I-have-other-overdue-assignments-that-are-worth-more. Oh, and being strafed by moths, flies and sundry other nocturnal insects that have made it into the office somehow.

Moi? Giry? But I'm just not *that* flexible!?!

Now, back to being a good "team-member".......

Still in the office? Wow, you're doing better than I am, I left the machine to chug away on my samples overnight and went home... Can't take it anymore.
04.11.2005 в 16:05

Yeah I'm packing up now. Midnight heeby-jeebies and all. Plus I still have Commercial law to tackle tomorrow. PLUS I said I'd have something sent over to my partner by the end of the day. Luckily for him, he's in WA and so has another 3 hours left in his Friday to wade through my incompetence. Bah.
04.11.2005 в 16:13

Tango
Well, I hope you have a good night, what's left of it... While you're tackling Commercial law tomorrow, I'll be battling my PCR reactions. Fun all around.
04.11.2005 в 16:26

I think we should just drop out and become radio announcers. On Community stations. I think that would be *awesome*.

I think I'm going to drive home and attempt not to become like the growing number of small creatures that have assumed two-dimensional form on the local roads.

Good luck with your PCR reactions. That has nothing to do with creating a new Gojira or anything, by chance???
04.11.2005 в 16:31

Tango
Radio announcers? Hmm. Well, if I can lecture students... :D

Gojira? (Though the answer is no, regardless).

Thanks -- good luck with Commercial law, etc!
